Position Summary
The Head Start Preschool Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality early childhood education and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations, including:
- Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS)
- Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Child Day Center Licensing Standards
- Mandated Reporting requirements for child abuse and neglect

The Teacher will plan and implement individualized learning experiences that support each child’s growth in a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Implement educational activities and lesson plans aligned with Head Start Performance Standards and VDOE licensing requirements.
- Create a positive classroom environment that promotes learning, creativity, and social-emotional development for children ages 3–5.
- Maintain compliance with health, safety, and emergency procedures as required by VDOE Child Day Center Licensing.
- Conduct developmental assessments, parent-teacher conferences, and home visits in accordance with Head Start standards.
- Collaborate with Teacher Assistants, Paraeducators, and family support staff to ensure comprehensive services for children and families.
- Adhere to Mandated Reporter laws by promptly reporting suspected cases of child abuse or neglect as required by state and federal policy.
- Participate in professional development, including training related to Head Start and licensing standards.
- Maintain accurate classroom records, attendance, and child portfolios.

Requirements

Qualifications


Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) preferred.

  • Associate degree in ECE or related field, or current CDA credential, may be accepted with enrollment in a bachelor’s program and an approved professional development plan.


Experience: Minimum of three (3) years in an early childhood or Head Start setting preferred.


Certifications:

  • CPR and First Aid (or ability to obtain within 3 months).

  • Must meet all VDOE Child Day Center Licensing health and background check requirements.


Skills:

  • Strong understanding of early childhood best practices, child development, and family engagement.

  • Effective communication, recordkeeping, and classroom management skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and child assessment software.


Employment Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

  • Must pass background, fingerprinting, and TB screenings.

  • Must adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards, VDOE Licensing, and Mandated Reporting requirements throughout employment.


Schedule & Compensation

  • Full-time, up to 8-hour shifts (between 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)

  • Competitive hourly rate based on education and experience
